Al-Nahda held a discussion session titled “Women’s Mobility and Its Impact on Economic and Social Empowerment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” as part of the Speakers Series launched by Al-Nahda Society in 2019. This was the second session of 2021, featuring a distinguished panel of speakers from Uber, the General Authority of Transport, and Al-Nahda Society.

The discussion began with Ms. Nour Shazly, Research Fellow at Al-Nahda’s Research Program, followed by Ms. Shaza Abu Daher, Director of Research at Al-Nahda, who spoke about women’s leadership, the opportunities available, and the challenges they face. Next, Ms. Dana Al-Zabin, Director of Public Policy for the Middle East at Uber, addressed the impact of leadership and ride-sharing on creating economic opportunities for women. She was followed by Ms. Ahlam Isa, a driver at one of the delivery platforms in Saudi Arabia, who shared her experience with driving and obtaining a license. The discussion concluded with Ms. Manal Al-Shahri, Project Manager in the Land Transport Sector at the General Authority of Transport, who highlighted the impact of regulations governing vehicle operations on women’s mobility empowerment.

It is noteworthy that in June 2018, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lifted the ban on women driving, marking a key reform in the country’s efforts over the past five years to empower women, ensure their rights, and increase their participation in economic development. Studies indicate that legislative reforms, such as granting women the right to drive, lead to shifts in social perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors, ultimately fostering women’s social and economic empowerment. This aligns with Al-Nahda’s mission to create a societal environment that values women’s participation, preserves their dignity, builds their capabilities, and fosters a cohesive society that uplifts its members, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and its pathways for achievement.
